Europe's Heatwave Changes Everything

This summer, Europe is enduring one of its hottest seasons on record. Spain, France, and other countries have shattered temperature highs, with several cities issuing their highest-level heat warnings.

The extreme heat is fundamentally changing how European consumers view heat pumps. Once considered a winter heating solution, these systems are now being embraced as year round climate control tools that deliver warmth in winter and cooling relief during increasingly brutal summers.

Across China’s manufacturing hubs, factories are running at full capacity to keep up with surging European orders. The pattern is unmistakable: heat pumps have evolved from seasonal products into essential all climate appliances.

Export Data Confirms the Surge

Chinese heat pump exports are accelerating at an impressive pace. According to customs data, exports of heat pump related products reached 304 million US dollars in April 2026, marking a 39 percent increase compared to the same period last year. This represents a sharp acceleration from the 8 percent growth recorded in March.

Europe remains the primary driver of this growth. In April 2026, the European Union accounted for 45.6 percent of China's total heat pump exports.

The Netherlands, Germany, and Spain all saw exports more than double year over year, signalling that European demand has entered a powerful new growth phase.

Three Forces Driving the Surge

1. The Cooling Factor

European customers historically bought heat pumps strictly for heating and frequently refused to include cooling vents. That pattern is now reversing quickly.

One manufacturer based in Ningbo, a major export hub in Zhejiang Province, observed that cooling vents have become increasingly popular over the last two years. As European summers grow hotter, consumers are rethinking what their heat pumps can do.

The same manufacturer is now dispatching 10 shipping containers per month, with orders already booked through October 2026. Recent shipments have gone to Slovenia, Kosovo, and Germany, with additional containers heading to Turkey.

2. Energy Economics

The ongoing Middle East conflict has driven natural gas prices from 28 euros per megawatt hour at the start of 2026 to 46 euros per megawatt hour, making heat pumps significantly more cost competitive.

According to European Union estimates, switching from a gas boiler to a heat pump can reduce household heating costs by 20 to 60 percent.

3. Policy Support

On April 22, 2026, the European Union released an accelerated clean energy transition plan targeting 4 million annual heat pump sales by 2030. This policy framework provides long term certainty for exporters and reinforces the market's growth trajectory.

The Shift from OEM to Brand Building

One noteworthy development in this export surge is the push toward direct brand presence in Europe. One Ningbo manufacturer has established its own branded operations in Europe and set up a permanent sales office in Leipzig, Germany.

This strategy moves beyond traditional OEM manufacturing and builds direct relationships with European customers, laying the groundwork for autonomous brand recognition. Industry analysts note that while Chinese heat pump exports have historically relied on contract manufacturing, the accelerating penetration of European markets is now creating opportunities for brand building.

The combination of rising energy costs, extreme weather events, and supportive EU policy has created a rare window for Chinese manufacturers to establish themselves as trusted suppliers in one of the world's most demanding heat pump markets.
